For several years, the gov has threatened the release of 750M Genetically Modified (GM) mosquitoes in the FL keys to combat dengue. Hal and I lived there 25 years, never a case of dengue. Then in the late 2000s, there were a few (conveeeeenient) cases in one year. That’s enough justification to release the franken-squitoes in the US.
It took years to be able to accomplish, but in 2021, the GM mosquitoes were finally released in the keys.
They’ve been released in other countries since at least 2009, all releases deemed a failure at stopping dengue (see links below). But apparently that’s of little concern. Possibly because stopping dengue was never the endgame.
Trial testing GM mosquitoes to deliver vaccines is equivalent to gain of function research. Unnecessary, unethical and breaks the Nuremberg Code.
What else could you deliver with this technology?

The briefing includes new evidence recently released as a result of Freedom of Information requests, which shows that scientists at the Mosquito Control and Research Unit (MRCU) in the Cayman Islands who have access to the experimental data believe there has been "no significant reduction in the abundance of Aedes aegypti in the release area".”

2019 Feb: NPR reports on the mosquito: https://www.npr.org/2019/02/20/696172467/morning-news-brief — scroll down to the mosquito section: “And these mosquitoes carry something called a gene drive. And the gene drive is what makes them spread their mutation so fast. And what this mutation does is it turns all the female mosquitoes into kind of mutants. They're kind of half female, half male. So they can't bite. Their mouths are like male mosquitoes, and that means they can't spread malaria. And they're also sterile, so they can't lay eggs. So the idea is that, you know, if you release them in Africa, they can sterilize the local population of mosquitoes and spread this mutation. And hopefully, you know, help eradicate malaria.”
